Making a 909 Kick THUMP

Here’s a little trick I’ve been using laity in some of my tracks. I take a standard 909 kick drum sample and load it into a simpler instrument in ableton. Then I will layer it at different semitones to get it to thump more in the mix. Note that you can expirement with any type of kick sample. It doesn’t have to be a 909.

Single Kick:

I programmed a single kick pattern on C3 for its original pitch.

Layered Kick:

Then I stacked the same 909 kick sample twice at lower semitones oneon B2 and A#2. It doesn’t matter which notes you choose to layer the sample on. Just keep stacking till it sounds nice and “phat”

EQ Time

Now its time to use some unorthodox eq to bring out the lows and top end of the stacked kick sample.

**Final Tip: Don’t be afraid to move some of the MIDI notes slightly off from each other to give the kick a different feel.
